Facing the Jabberwocky in Your Life

"So my old foe, we meet on the battlefield once again." Said the Jabberwocky.

I've heard many negative things said about the 2010 Alice in Wonderland. Some disliked that animation and real actors were both used. They felt that it should have been completely animated, without real life characters. Uhm, HELLO! Who doesn't like Johnny Depp!? Or Helen Bonham Carter?

Some didn't like the violence, and even argue that it is inappropriate for a children's movie. First of all, you should always read a movie review on anything you are wanting to watch. If you don't like violence you can read reviews and avoid watching videos like this. Secondly, Alice in Wonderland (2010) was not advertised as a children's video.

But most of all, the largest complaint was that they didn't understand the video. I must admit I was rather bewildered that someone wouldn't understand this amazing movie! Then I remembered that I do rather love and crave the knack to interpret allegories in my own special way. Inherited by my father might I add. My mom absolutely hates allegorical movies. I completely understand if you walk away from reading this thinking I'm insane and take movies way too seriously. And now this is where I shall share my opinions on what the allegorical movie meant to me!

I walked away feeling extremely inspired. Here is a young girl, facing life decisions. Who she is, who she wants to be, and what she is becoming. What she believes is right and wrong and the realization that just because everyone else says what is right and wrong doesn't mean they are correct. But most of all, I was inspired that she stepped out and embraced who she was. I viewed the Jabberwocky as the things in life that you are afraid to embrace. The dreams you have. Who you want to be. Being afraid of what your friends, family, peers will think. It inspired me to step out for myself, and face the Jabberwocky in my life.

"From the moment I fell down that rabbit hole, I've been told what I must do and who I must be. I've been shrunk, stretched, scratched, and stuffed into a tea pot. I've been accused of being Alice and of not being Alice, but this is MY dream! I'll decide where it goes from here." said Alice. "If you diverge from the path..."  Bayard replied. "I make the path!" Alice declared.

Are you allowing people to tell you what to dream? Because you are afraid of what they will think?

This is your dream. You decide where it goes from here. You make the path!

"I try to believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Count them, Alice. One, there are drinks that make you shrink. Two, there are foods that make you grow. Three, animals can talk. Four, cats can disappear. Five, there is a place called Underland. Six, I can slay the Jabberwocky."

Don't let someone tell you what to believe. Who knows, you might just be missing out on the potions, cakes, talking animals, smiling and disappearing cats... you might be missing out on YOUR Wonderland.
And most of all, avoiding the Jabberwocky in your life.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
    The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
    And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
    And burbled as it came!

One two! One two! And through and through
    The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
    He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
    He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

So I say,

rise up, and slay your Jabberwocky!

  6. This is an interesting interpretation! I actually didn't care for the Alice-Jabberwocky part because I felt like it was super feminist... but you're idea made me change my mind. =)
